Jannik Sinner, the world’s number one tennis player, is set to return to the court after serving a three-month doping ban. The ban was imposed after Sinner tested positive for the banned substance Clostebol in March 2024, but he maintained that the substance entered his system unintentionally through massages from his physiotherapist.¹
Sinner’s ban was initially set to be longer, but he reached a compromise agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The agency’s general counsel, Ross Wenzel, stated that the case was “a million miles away from doping” and that Sinner’s sanction was “in the right place”.²
The Italian tennis star will resume training on April 13 and is set to make his comeback at the Italian Open, followed by the Hamburg Open, where he’ll compete for the first time in his career.³ Sinner’s return is highly anticipated, and he’ll be looking to regain his momentum after missing several tournaments due to the ban.
It’s worth noting that Sinner’s doping ban has sparked controversy, with some players alleging double standards in the tennis world. However, WADA has defended the ban, stating that it’s consistent with the agency’s rules and regulations.⁴
