Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian has been vocal about the significant impact Nick Saban had on his career. In a recent interview, Sarkisian expressed his gratitude towards Saban, who gave him a second chance at Alabama in 2016. At the time, Sarkisian was struggling to get back into coaching after being fired from USC and completing a stint in rehab for alcohol abuse.¹

 

Saban offered Sarkisian an analyst job, which he was willing to take for free. However, Saban insisted on paying him $30,000 to ensure he received benefits.

This gesture not only helped Sarkisian get back on his feet but also changed his perspective on coaching and dealing with players.

 

Sarkisian has often spoken about the importance of second chances, and he credits Saban for giving him one. He’s also praised Saban’s influence on his coaching style, particularly in terms of how he approaches his players. Sarkisian has said that he tries to extend the same kind of olive branch to his own players, recognizing that everyone faces challenges.

 

Under Saban’s guidance, Sarkisian played a crucial role in Alabama’s national championship win in 2020. He’s since taken the reins at Texas, where he’s working to rebuild the Longhorns program.² Despite facing his former mentor and team in 2022, Sarkisian has maintained a deep respect for Saban, calling him the “GOAT” and thanking him for his enduring influence.
